Recently in U.S. History, Faith studied the Civil War and also learned about the Gateway Arch in studies about American landmarks. This presented the perfect opportunity for field trips as we traveled to Mississippi.
On December 30, we visited Fort Pillow in western Tennessee. Fort Pillow was the sight of the Battle at Fort Pillow on April 12, 1864. It was a victory for Confederate soldiers yet was highly controversial for the 200 black soldiers killed during the battle. It gave Faith a first hand look at an actual battlefield during the Civil War. We stopped at Gateway Arch in St. Louis on our way home on January 18. We rode the tram to the top of the arch and spent some time touring the museum that sits underground at the Arch. Faith found the tiny tram a bit frightening but enjoyed the view at the top.

Mom has needed a new roof for several years but funds have not been available. This year we were able to finally get the roof done. We started New Year's Day after waiting for poor weather to pass. It took us 10 days to get the old roof torn off and the new roof completely finished due to the wet weather. We were thankful for the help provided by Nathan's brother and sister, and his niece and nephew. Even Faith got in on the action by picking up nails and assisting us on the roof. We are grateful that Mom finally has a good roof.
Normally when we travel to Mississippi, we travel straight through with little opportunity for sightseeing. Since we were on I-90 in St. Regis, we decided to take the northern route. It would be the first time Amber and Faith were in South Dakota. On the 18th, we traveled to Buffalo, WY stopping to see the Little Bighorn Battlefield in Montana. The next day we went to Crazy Horse Monument and then to Mt. Rushmore. We spent the night in Rapid City, SD. The next morning we went to Wall Drug and then on to the Badlands. After touring the Badlands, we joined Salmon Valley Baptist online for worship. We would not have had that opportunity a year ago. We then went to North Sioux City, SD to spend the night. The next day was a day of travel to reach Mississippi. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip and recommend all of our stops, We are thankful to the Lord for the wonderful opportunity.
