Recently in U.S. History, Faith studied the Civil War and also learned about the Gateway Arch in studies about American landmarks. This presented the perfect opportunity for field trips as we traveled to Mississippi.
On December 30, we visited Fort Pillow in western Tennessee. Fort Pillow was the sight of the Battle at Fort Pillow on April 12, 1864. It was a victory for Confederate soldiers yet was highly controversial for the 200 black soldiers killed during the battle. It gave Faith a first hand look at an actual battlefield during the Civil War. We stopped at Gateway Arch in St. Louis on our way home on January 18. We rode the tram to the top of the arch and spent some time touring the museum that sits underground at the Arch. Faith found the tiny tram a bit frightening but enjoyed the view at the top.
